“I’m in love with Neville too,” Harry repeated. He ran his hand through his hair.
“I don’t understand.” Hermione couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Harry was in love with Neville too? That. What. She couldn’t. “I don’t understand! What do you mean, you’re in love with Neville too?”
“You’re so cute when you’re flustered,” Harry said, smirking.
Hermione stomped her foot. “Harry James! Answer my question.”
“Fine. I meant what I said, I love him too. We spent a lot of time together during that last year at Hogwarts, and we’ve been friends for a while. I guess there’s been an attraction there since sixth year.”
“Yeah. Well, I guess it was sixth year when I discovered that I didn’t only like girls. I…” Harry blushed. “I spent an inordinate amount of time staring at Draco Malfoy’s arse.”
Hermione laughed. “Malfoy?”
“Hey, he may be a huge git, but he’s very attractive.”
“Well, I knew that I found him attractive, but I wasn’t comfortable doing anything about it, that and I was madly in love with you. But after the war, he and I spent a lot more time together, and he became my best mate. I still wasn’t going to do anything about it, since you and I started dating.”
“Then a few weeks ago, he came to me,” Harry continued. “He confessed that he had fallen in love with you, but that he wasn’t going to do anything about it. In fact, he had this whole cockamamie plan to distance himself from the two of us so that he wouldn’t interfere with our relationship.”
“I got a bit angry, you know how I am,” Harry said, smirking at her. “Then I shocked the hell out him. I kissed him right on the mouth and told him to shut up.”
Hermione just stared at Harry in shock.
“You should have seen his face,” Harry said with a laugh. “I don’t think he’d ever looked at me that way before.”
“Harry…what’s going on? I mean obviously I feel less guilty now about kissing Nev, but it seems the two of you had a plan or something, what was that all about?”
Harry blushed. “Well, after our kiss, we talked. This was the weekend you were at that conference in Chicago, so we took the whole weekend. Nothing happened except that kiss, but we came up with an idea.”
Harry shrugged. “it’s simple, I think. You love Neville and me, I love You and Neville, Neville loves us both.” He shrugged again. Now that the moment was here, it all sounded a bit too fanciful for his tastes. To be honest, none of this had really gone the way they thought it would. Granted, neither he nor Neville was really known for their planning skills.
“You…you want us to become a triad?” Hermione asked, shocked. Triads weren’t common in the wizarding world, but they weren’t unknown either. It seemed that every generation there was at least one triad.
“Well, we thought it was a good idea. It was either that or make some choices that neither Neville or I were comfortable with.”
“Yeah. I…Look, Hermione, I can’t make you choose. I wouldn’t do that. Besides, this option seems like the best.
“I know that it’ll be odd, and that it’ll take a lot of work,” Harry shrugged. “Maybe the three of us can make a go at it?”
Harry looked at Hermione with hope in his eyes. He knew that if he had to choose between Neville and Hermione, his choice was already made. He hoped that if Hermione had to choose between him and Neville that she’d choose him. But he didn’t want to make her choose when there was another option available to them.
“I’m…I’m not sure, Harry. This is…I mean, I’ve never thought about…” Hermione stuttered. She didn’t know what to think.
Harry stepped forward. “You don’t have to decide right now. And…well, nothing has to change at all if you don’t want. I’ve chosen you. I love you. If you want to keep things the same way, Neville will understand.”
“I don’t want to hurt him,” Hermione whispered, leaning into Harry and wrapping her arms around his waist. “I don’t want to hurt you, either.”
“You won’t,” Harry assured her, wrapping her in his arms. “You won’t. I know this is complicated, but we’ll work it out. We’ve never failed at anything when we’ve worked together.”
Neville was avoiding her. Harry was being an angel. And she was still mightily confused. Of course, it was partially her fault. If she hadn’t kissed Neville in the first place, she and Harry would still be just as happy as ever. Not that they weren’t still happy, of course. They were. But now there was a tension there that hadn’t existed before.
And Neville was avoiding her. And she missed him.
That led to her stepping into his office right after he’d arrived at his office. He was still taking his coat off when she walked into his office and slammed the door behind her.
Hermione watched as Neville’s face turned bright red. “H-hermione! W-what are you doing here,” he asked, stammering.
Hermione put her fists on her hips and glared at him. “What am I doing here? What am I doing here? I’m here because you’re ignoring me, you prat! You and Harry had this harebrained idea, and then you go off and start avoiding me as if I were contagious with spattergroit!”
Neville hung his head in shame. “I-I’m sorry!”
“No, you’re not. But you will be. You’re taking the day off and coming with me!”
“No buts! You, me and Harry are going to get this sorted today!” Hermione said firmly. She then walked over to him and grabbed him by the ear. “And I’ll be making sure you don’t go running off!”
Harry looked up when his office door was slammed open. This was an unusual occurrence. Mostly the people who worked with him were either too considerate to do such a thing or they were too scared of him to even consider flying into his office unannounced. Harry was just about to deliver a stern reprimand when he found himself face to face with Hermione and Neville. He had to choke back a laugh when he found that Hermione was leading Neville into the office by his ear.
“Ah,” Harry said with a smile, “I see you finally cornered him.”
Neville watched nervously as Hermione Granger paced back and forth in Harry’s office. He hadn’t expected this when he’d walked into work this morning. Granted, he’d done everything in his power to avoid Hermione over the last few days.
“Hermione?” Harry asked cautiously. “Did you want to say something to Neville?”
“Did I… Did I want to say something?” Hermione shrieked, finally standing still. She placed her hands on her hips and graced Harry with a glare that would have sent lesser men running for the hills. “Of course, I want to say something, Harry Potter! I want to know what the bloody hell is going on! Neville has been avoiding me for days, and you’re pretending as if nothing has happened! Did you or did you not concoct a cockamamie plan for us to form a triad?”
Harry nodded with a smirk. “I did.”
“Then why haven’t we talked about it more?”
“Because you’re confused,” Harry said, standing up from his desk. “I wanted to give you time. As for why Neville has been avoiding you, well…He’s a Hufflepuff at heart and forgot his Gryffindor at home.”
Hermione snorted then laughed, finally hugging Harry back. Neville huffed in the background. Harry looked over Hermione’s shoulder and smirked.
“How do we even go about this? I mean, I think I’m pretty good at dating one guy, but two? I don’t even know where to begin!” Hermione exclaimed.
“So, we’re doing this?” Harry asked, pulling back from their embrace.
“I love you both. I…I’m scared that at the end of it that I’ll be alone. But I want to try.” Hermione turned and looked at Neville. “You’ve been very quiet, Nev.”
“You scared the crap out of me, Mione. I wasn’t expecting to see you in my office this morning, let alone for you to drag me to the Ministry of Magic. You’re bloody scary sometimes.”
Harry and Hermione smirked. Harry sobered then said, “As to your question, Hermione, the best way to start, I think is a date for the three of us. There’s no guidebook for this sort of thing and no timeline. I think slow and steady will be the best for us.”
So they went on a date. It was…well it was awkward at first. But once they got into a rhythm, it turned out fine. Harry and Hermione walked Neville to his flat and they both kissed him goodbye. Hermione watched on as the two boys snogged, finding it incredibly hot.
Their relationship moved slowly. It was hard for the three of them to not just be friends because it seemed so odd for them to be in a three-way relationship. But over time they got over the awkwardness and learned how to include each other into their lives.
Six months after Harry and Hermione got with Neville, the three of them moved into a house together. At first, they maintained separate beds, but that didn’t last long at all.
Part Twenty One
Hermione had learned that she really liked watching the boys together while they were in bed, and the boys learned that Hermione was always especially amorous after watching the two of them make love to one another. They had some really great times together, and all three felt complete for the first time in their lives.
In December of 2008, just a year and a half after they all got together, Harry and Hermione proposed to Neville. Neville, of course, shocked his lovers by proposing right back. Apparently, he had been carrying the rings around for months and had just been waiting for Harry to get on with it.
Hermione ended up carrying four children, three for Harry and one for Neville. Rose, Jared and Marcus Potter had been triplets and were monsters (according to their mother). Maria Longbottom was the sweetest little Hufflepuff ever and was able to reign in her half-siblings, most of the time.
Harry, Hermione, and Neville watched as their four children played together in the back garden of Potter Manor. The three of them held onto each other tight, each thankful for the hard choices that they had made those many years ago. Hermione would never regret that illicit first kiss with Neville. She loved both of her boys, and she would forevermore.
