The Problems with Outlining

Writing a story is hard. Whether it’s original or fanfiction, it’s just hard. The thing that most professional writers will tell you is that you need to outline. Even if you’re a blogger, outlining is one of the things that the ‘pros’ will tell you to do.

The problem is that I can’t do it.

Well, more accurately, I can do it, I just can’t follow it. I write the outline, then completely go off the rails within just a few paragraphs. I want to be all organized and amazing at it, but no matter how much will power I put into it, it just doesn’t happen.

It is probably one of the biggest reasons why I haven’t been able to get a Harry Potter fanfic up and published, despite hundreds of ideas. I refuse to put anything up that size without knowing where it is going to go, at least generally.

So I’m going to try something new. Who cares about organization? I’m just going to write my ideas down to start, something that I’ve never done before. Usually, I just start writing the story, then abandon it on my hard drive because the idea has become lost or muddled.

We’ll see if the simple writing down of ideas can help. Hopefully this will lead to some bigger stories coming out of my computer in the next few months.

Also, unrelatedly , this blogging thing is going well two days in. We’ll see if I can keep it up.
